Contrary to its name and popular belief, the Australian Shepherd did not originate in Australia, despite the breed commonly being known as an "Aussie." The Australian Shepherd is classified as a working dog, is tall with long, whispy hair and can be any of several colors (usually called merle) although, they are often seen wearing brown, black or bluish black coats with white accents. Because of its working classification, the Australian Shepherd is at its prime when it has a job to do and the breed is well known for excelling in sporting activities such as obstacle courses and frisbee. The breed is most well known, however, for its unique temperament. The Australian Shepherd actually has two distinct personalities running within the breed as opposed to one general temperament. One type of Australian Shepherd may be more guarded and more reserved and may not be suitable for homes with children, and the other type is actually specially bred for socialization and tend to be more happy and energetic.
