About the Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is a small, long-haired dog with roots in Tibet, and has been bred from what experts believe to be both a Pekingese and the Lhasa Apso. Although the Shih Tzu is small, in Tibet, it was considered a holy dog due to its resemblance to a lion and in turn having an association with a Buddhist god. The Shih Tzu is most often a gorgeous color of ebony and stark white, although other colors have been seen gracing the Shih Tsu's silky coat as well. The Shih Tzu's ears and
tail are long in relation so such a small body, however, both are often covered with so much hair that they tend to blend in with the rest of the dog. Due to the amount of hair on this adorable breed, Shih Tzus must be groomed regularly by a professional with plenty of upkeep by the owner at home. Some owners prefer to keep the hair cut short due to the fact that if the hair is kept
long, it must be brushed daily. Shih Tzus are known for their amicable personalities, are very alert and surprisingly make excellent watchdogs.
